Sumner County
Situated just north of Davidson County, Sumner County
stretches all the way to the Tennessee-Kentucky border.
Hendersonville, Sumner County's, largest town, has seen
tremendous growth over the last few years. Thousands of
visitors each year flock to Hendersonville, where more
country stars have taken up residence than any other
Middle Tennessee community. Gallatin, the county seat, has
the second highest population. Sumner County draws people
from other communities who desire clean air, affordable
housing, scenic landscapes, and a multitude of diverse
recreational opportunities that are convenient to home. As
an ideal environment for both families and businesses to
place roots, Sumner County offers the illusive combination
of wholesomeness, a strong community spirit and a general
feeling of security that so many people seek in today's
complex world. Sumner County offers such popular
recreation areas as Old Hickory Lake and the Cumberland
River.
Transportation
Located northeast of downtown Nashville, Sumner County's
highway access includes Interstate 65 and the new
Hendersonville By-Pass, Vietnam Veteran's Parkway. A large
percentage of the county's residents are commuters to the
larger metropolitan businesses, particularly downtown
Nashville. More affordable homes with larger waterfront
lots than those available in Old Hickory and Davidson
County areas have made Hendersonville worth the few extra
minutes in commuting time.
Health Care
Sumner County is home to three excellent health-care
facilities: Hendersonville Hospital, Tennessee Christian
Medical Center in Portland, and Sumner Regional Medical
Center in Gallatin. Hendersonville Hospital alone
maintains over 130 physicians on staff, placing a strong
emphasis on quality, cost-effective medicine. Skilled
technicians and physicians are available in the areas of
family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology,
and pediatrics.
Education
The Sumner County School System, one of the largest in the
state, is considered one of the finest in overall quality
education. Not only is the pupil-to-teacher ratio low, but
guidance counselors are available from kindergarten to
twelfth grade to address and resolve problems that range
from drugs to career plans. Other special programs offered
by Sumner County schools include a school-to-work
transition program and a summer enrichment program that
assists students in obtaining the skills needed to become
successful as they graduate. A quality, affordable higher
education is available in Sumner County at Volunteer State
Community College in Gallatin. Fully accredited by the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Volunteer
State offers associate degrees in the Arts and Sciences
and applied science.
Quality of Life
Surrounded to the south by the Cumberland River and Old
Hickory Lake, Sumner County provides ample opportunities
for water sports and recreational fun, guaranteed to
please every age and activity level. Boat docks and an
array of community parks provide clean, attractive areas
for fishing, sunbathing, picnicking, bicycling, and
hiking. One of the county's foremost recreational
facilities is the Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club in
Hendersonville. Its 86-slip facility nestled in
picturesque Bluegrass Cove on Old Hickory Lake is only one
aspect of the fine amenities available. It also has a
superior 18-hole golf course--with rolling fairways and
rich landscaping, 6 tennis courts and refreshing pools
combined with dining party, banquet, and conference
facilities.
Communities
Rich in history, Gallatin features such landmarks as the
first manor house west of the Alleghenies and Bledsoe's
Fort Historical Park. Goodlettsville is located just north
of downtown Nashville, offering easy access to I-65 and
U.S. 31. Hendersonville provides lakeside living in a
affordable price range. The most northern city is Portland
and the northwestern city of White House are both
manufacturing communities. Both cities offer country
living without the inconveniences of living in a truly
rural town.
